Flowerfolk is a herbal-based skin care line that creates
useful and simple formulations out of plants.
This small one-woman business seeks to enhance personal and collective well-being by creating
thoughtfully made herbal products using practices that honor the natural world around us.
It is Flowerfolk’s mission to create useful, nourishing and beautiful herbal-based formulations that
feed the skin and spirit. All of the products are composed of organic herbs, plant oils, clays, floral
waters and essential oils that are chosen for their healing and soothing properties, and with an
emphasis on common North American-growing herbs.
From the Proprietress, Steph Zabel…
I officially started Flowerfolk in the summer of 2009, but really it all started long before then. All my life I’ve had an affinity for the plant life that grows quietly all around us and gravitated more towards the natural elements rather than the human-made. Although in school I formally studied plant sciences I also simultaneously steeped myself in the study of herbalism and in traditional plant folklore. I awakened to the beauty and power that is held within the green beings.
My formal studies involved degrees in biology and horticulture as well as a masters degree in ethnobotany. I set out on field work in Mexico and Dominica, curious about traditional plant use abroad and following the trail of plant lore and plant wisdom. After moving to New England I began studies with several local herbalists and am currently undertaking advanced herbal studies through the CommonWealth Center for Herbal Medicine. Though I’ve been on the herbal path for over ten years, I know that the wisdom that the plants have to share will take the rest of my life in learning.
Flowerfolk began as a desire to share the goodness of herbs with others. For so many years I have been making my own herbal medicines, teas and cosmetics, and have relied on herbs for their healing, soothing and nourishing gifts. And so I wanted others to become familiar with these botanical gifts, too. The Flowerfolk name was chosen as a way to honor the folk traditions that are so wise in their use and knowledge of herbs, and which my business is rooted in.
